Week 13, Day 90 – “Baseball Game”

Baseball Game

bottom of the fourth
there was no one on
I was up to bat
with two strikes on me
the crowd was busy
getting more hot dogs
no one expected
a big game changer
third strike came and I
didn’t disappoint
I swung right through it
no where even close
walked to the dugout
watched the next at bat

baseball isn’t supposed to be like this.

Week 13, Day 89 – “Whatever Happened”

Whatever Happened

Whatever happened
to my Saturday morning cartoons
to games of kickball at John St. Park
and two square in the neighbor’s driveway
to action figures in the sandbox
to orange sodas in real glass bottles
and rhubarb growing wild out back
to neighborhood kids just hanging out
to being chased by Jen’s flirting tag
and lip-syncing “I Think We’re Alone Now”
as the sun goes down

Week 13, Day 88 – “Piano”

Piano

the piano hammer strikes
making my baby grand sing
crying songs of joy today
failing to hide a broken
heart

Week 13, Day 87 – “Layers”

Layers

learn a little
live a little
everyday

reaching without effort
toward the next level
getting always closer

until the end of our days
when our progress is judged

Week 13, Day 86 – “The Future I Snow”

The Future I Snow

fifty degrees centigrade
super humid, too
– so not cool.

global warming keeps coming
into the future
– no way out.

Week 13, Day 85 – “Unpopular”

Unpopular

There is just something about her
that doesn’t seem right.
No make-up, and disheveled
She shows up every Tuesday
at the laundromat
with two loads of clothes
whites and darks, becoming shades of gray.
She would sit close to her washer
each week reading a new paperback romance novel.
She never talked to anyone.

I always wanted to walk up to her and say “Hi”
but she never seemed to look up from her book
and I just couldn’t seem to make the start.
Don’t know why, but I was fascinated by her.
What was her deal?
What did she do?
Was there a story there somewhere?

So you better get ready.
